When your child is coming out to you - before you react at all - please STOP and take a deep breath. Words spoken in haste cannot be recalled. Your child’s greatest fear is that you will stop loving them. But your child is still the same person and deserves your unconditional love.

coming out

A loved one coming out as queer can feel like a bomb exploding, destroying our perceived image of what “family” looks like. Our own values, prejudices, and beliefs are suddenly challenged, throwing us into overwhelming fear.  This may cause us to instinctively lash out with denials, hurtful words, or accusations.

While no road map will look the same for everyone on this journey, knowing there are resources to help navigate the twists and turns can give you courage to begin.

coming to terms with queer

In the past, queer was used as a slur.  Now the term is being liberated by some advocates within the LGBTQ+ community.

Queer is now an umbrella term used for those who do not identify as heterosexual ("straight") or cisgender. It  creates a space of acceptance and inclusivity for all, regardless of gender or sexuality.

Kathy Tu and Tobin Low, co-hosts of the podcast Nancy, which features stories that cover all things LGBTQ+, gathered the best tips for both sides of this conversation.
